da Vinci Series

Artist's Statement

I began this series armed with books, articles, videos, and pictures of the life and times of Leonardo da Vinci. The outcome is my interpretation of this man’s life and works through the genre of still life painting. I selected objects that are common in the modern world, yet could have been held in Leonardo’s hands over five hundred years ago. The objects had to transcend time and represent keys facts or qualities about da Vinci.

As the ideas for the paintings evolved, the objects took on greater importance. They were placed at or slightly above eye-level to heighten their significance. Beyond this physical placement, each still life has an “elevated” meaning relative to Leonardo’s life. The skies represent the constant change and nervous energy characteristic of this man. The objects depict a time in his life and refer to Leonardo’s personal qualities. I invite you to contemplate the other elements of each painting as a way into the world of Leonardo da Vinci.

The da Vinci Series will be shown at the Latin School of Chicago from January 14 - January 28, 2005.
